How can faded leather be coloured again?

Here we show you all the ways in which you can restore your leather to its original fresh colour.

Depending on the condition of the leather, there are several ways to match the colour. Whether light or heavy fading or recolouring during repairs - the right shade is crucial for success. Although standard colours can also be used, the best result can be achieved with the original colour of the leather.

The variety of colours in today's leather upholstered furniture is huge, and determining the original shade is not always easy. We offer you 3 ways to find the optimum shade for your leather colour.

Standard colours

To refresh light fading, we offer the professional KERALUX^® Colour Lotion in 22 standard colours for smooth leather or nubuck leather.

Original colour

The best results are achieved with a colour lotion that exactly matches the original colour of the leather. This means that we mix the colour individually for your leather. This gives you the certainty that the colour is absolutely the same as the original colour of your sofa.

How does this work? It's simple: you send us a small piece of your leather (e.g. from the underside, from the inside seam of a cushion, etc.) as a sample. In our laboratory, we scan your colour using a modern colour mixing computer and thus obtain the exact recipe for your colour. We then mix your colour individually for you by hand in the laboratory:

Which products are suitable for dyeing leather?

Light fading

Slightly faded leather can be refreshed very well with the matching KERALUX^® Colour Repair Set.

It is important that the leather is thoroughly cleaned before use, as the colour can only penetrate deep into the leather through clean pores.

Superficial abrasions

Superficial wear and tear such as slight abrasions (e.g. on seat edges) or surfaces with slightly brittle colour can be visually restored with the professional KERALUX^® Repair Set.

Heavy fading

However, if the colour of the leather has already faded considerably, only a professional can help. Depending on how dirty the leather is, it will first be thoroughly cleaned and then re-dyed. The original colour is mixed so that the leather looks like new after the treatment.

Can the fading of leather be prevented?

In principle, fading of leather cannot be completely prevented, but it can be delayed to some extent. The simplest preventative measure is to lower the blinds to protect against direct sunlight. It is also important to clean the leather regularly and treat it with a care lotion with a sun protection effect.

Why does leather fade?

Some types of leather have a tendency to fade due to the way they are manufactured. Natural leather in particular (pure aniline) without a protective colour top layer loses its colour intensity over time. The dyes used to dye aniline leathers are less lightfast than the colour pigments used to finish pigmented leathers. There are also qualitative differences in the light fastness of colour pigments themselves. If cheap pigments are used to save costs, this can result in the leather fading more quickly. The thicker the layer of colour applied to pigmented leathers, the better the light fastness.
