The creation and production of silk fabrics begins with a silk moth butterfly. It spends its short lifespan of 2-3 days laying eggs from which tiny and extremely voracious caterpillars hatch. They pupate in a cocoon by secreting a thread from two body glands.
Before they emerge as butterflies, they are killed. The cocoons are then brushed in warm water until the beginning of the thread is found. The threads are spun and woven into fine silk fabric in many special steps.
- Silk is characterized by its sheen and high strength. The extraordinary length of this natural fibre, its tensile strength, fineness and characteristic feel make silk one of the finest textile materials.
- The protein structure of silk is very similar to that of our skin and is therefore not perceived as foreign to the body. It is particularly kind to the skin, as the smooth and fine fiber does not irritate the skin.
- Silk has a temperature-regulating effect, i.e. it warms when it is cold and cools when it is warm.
Care of silk fabrics
Upholstery covers made of silk require very special care to ensure that they remain beautiful for a long time. It is important to use only suitable cleaning agents that do justice to the demanding properties of the material.
Tip: Do not “rub” stains, otherwise there is a risk of damaging the fabric. Use PURATEX® Strong Cleaner for cleaning.
