Vegetable tanned leathers are characterized by the fact that the animal skin is tanned exclusively with plant parts.
Bark, e.g. from oak, spruce or birch trees, but also leaves (e.g. from olive trees) or fruit are particularly suitable for this purpose.
Vegetable tanned leather can usually be recognized by its brown/cognac colour.
History of vegetable tanning
Vegetable tanning was the most common way of producing leather for a long time. There is evidence that vegetable tanning was already being used around 5000 years ago.
Today, vegetable tanning only accounts for around 10% of leather production.
Care of vegetable tanned leather
Cleaning and care of this type of leather is difficult because the leather is extremely sensitive and cannot even be cleaned with water, otherwise the surface of this type of leather will be destroyed.
We therefore recommend cleaning the leather exclusively with the KERALUX® Cleaner for vegetable tanned leather and then treating it with the specially developed KERALUX® Care Lotion for vegetable tanned leather to preserve the beauty and typical properties of this leather.
